Defense knowledge has not scaled at the same speed as attack capabilities. This talk intends to revert this imbalance. Most severe attack vectors on mobile phones are due to an outdated technology base that lacks strong cryptographic authentication or confidentiality. Given this discrepancy between protection need and reality, a number of countermeasures were developed for networks and phones to better protect their users. We explain the most important measures and track their deployment. Furthermore, we will release tools to measure the level of vulnerability of networks. 1. I was at Circus Circus hotel registration which is down stairs from the Adventure Dome and the booth right next to registration had a couple of cool devices. One was an iphone extension zoom camera lens for iphone 4 and iphone 4s. ( I apologies for saying iphone 4gs as I carry a 4g Verizon phone, and iphone 4 and 4s is only a 3g phone, not a 4g phone so sorry for saying 4gs but i couldn't go back and do a retake). 2. A universal SOLAR cell phone charger. The man at the register demonstrated charging my phone in low light. THATS RIGHT SOLAR ENERGY! Again, the solar charger works on any cell phone. The WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer recently listed the signals from wireless devices as "possibly carcinogenic." This finding puts cell phones in the same risk group as the pesticide DDT -- but also in the same group as coffee. A group of thirty-one scientists from fourteen countries made the finding. The announcement came at the end of a meeting at the agency's headquarters in Lyon, France. The concern is that extended contact with radiofrequency electromagnetic fields may increase a user's risk for glioma. Glioma is the most common form of brain cancer.The scientists spent a week examining existing research. Dr. Jonathan Samet from the University of Southern California led the group. He says the finding that there could be some risk means scientists need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer. The statement noted that the number of mobile phone users is large and growing, especially among young adults and children. Mobile phone subscriptions are estimated at five billion worldwide. Some people consider location tracking to be a threat to personal privacy and security. Allan Friedman is the research director for technology and innovation at the Brookings Institution in Washington. He says all wireless companies do some amount of location tracking as part of their networks. Mr. Friedman says this information is usually stored by the companies, not the devices, and there are laws to protect it. He says: "Law enforcement, for example, has to have a fairly high standard before it can access that data. And the phone company is also prohibited from selling that information."Congress discussed the issue of mobile privacy last year. Now, two researchers reported that location tracking information is being stored directly on Apple devices. They said Apple's newest operating systems gather global positioning system and timestamp information. The information is stored on the device in a file that is also uploaded to any computer that the device is connected to.
